Well, you should probably narrow it down to the genres you like. Once you have that done, just Google or Youtube search "obscure/underground American *whatever genre* albums."

You could also start with the album "Spiderland" by Slint and go where that takes you. Incredible album, an underground legend.

Nice video,most of what you said is correct,but also as much as I think mainstream isn't the greatest,still it's sometimes good for a certain band/artist to be mainstream that doesn't conform @ the same time.Like kind of just toying around with all the big society media people,good example is Nirvana,they may have reached mainstream success,yet pretty much stayed true to their "underground ways"of playing all crazy,detuned guitars,mumbled off-key screams etc.

yes underground bands are better for many reasons one is that they are unique most mainstream bands all have the same rythem or sound to them becasue they figure thats the stuff they have to play to remain famous unlike underground bands who make music unique. also mainstream bands are over famed and their music gets plaied to much to were they only have one or two good songs u hear them non stop on the radio,mtv,vh1 etc, nonstop and it gets annoying within a mounth they get boring i agree :]

i agree with more skill should come more money, take obscura for example, their new bassist studied for 10+ years just to play in their progressive technical death metal maybe not under ground but an amazingly talented band totally worth a listen and I would honestly say they've earned their place :)

@GrungeRockabilly yeah it wus mainly just a frustration thing when he couldnt tune it in the start so it wus like he just said screw it,after Nevermind tho,they definately strayed away from mainstream with Incesticide.

@tofumunky I have heard that one too, and apparently he just tuned his guitar wrong and therefore he decided to "sing" like that.

@GrungeRockabilly I do agree that Sonic Youth has much more detuned/custom tunings in their songs,but Nirvana do have one particular performance playing Come As You Are out of tune,and screaming out of tune as well,theres a clip of it on youtube,and im sure theres a few other times they've done that too.So maybe for the most part their live performances tended to go more underground(judging by videos)than their studio recordings.

The reason why mainstrream bands suck and underground bands don't is because to become a succesful, mainstream commodity, you have to fit the mold, and the mold sucks.
