Martin, Steve and I were joined by Ben and Luke of BareBowArchery for a shoot one Sunday morning. We decided to have some fun with a motorcycle crash helmet, and see how it would stand up against a few arrows...

  • Hey nick , pretty soon i am thinking about buying a italian yew warbow, but i need to choose between 2 bowyers. Steve stratton or celestino poletti. Which bowyer do you think is better.

    Thanks

  • @warbowgeeks I will send you a private message.

  • How would you compare force generated by longbow to for example impact of couched lance of mace/warhammer from horseback? (e.g. what draw weight would equal lance impact from horse going lets say 20 km/h )

  • @lucinqua Hi Lucinqua. I hope you are well. This is a good question and I wish I had the data to compare the force generated by each of the above but sadly I do not. However, I believe there is no way any bow could match the impact from a couched lance on horseback. That would be huge. An arrow simply does not have the mass to deliver such a crushing blow.

  • Yes, seeing this in my sub box made me happy.

  • @lonepantherkmt It is only a "fail" (a rather childish American colloquialism) if you assume the purpose of the video to be a demonstration of the helmet's ability to withstand arrow hits. It is not and was never intended to be. It is merely a bit of fun showing how a variety of interesting everyday objects behave when subjected to arrow hits off a high powered bow. No reasonable person would ever assume the helmet was designed to withstand such impacts. Enjoyment can be a legitimate goal too.

  • This is really amazing, you all seem like extremely talented archers!

  • ouch

  • Wow...new respect for the longbow as a weapon of war! Fortunately for the US the Indians didn't have them.

  • @learrus Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah we too were surprised at how well the helmet and visor deflected some of the shots.

  • @bigbowbrum

I did personally find it suprising that the front on shots, the shape of the helmet seemed to deflect the arrows to a degree; but this was then a moot point when a true direct shot landed...

Thanks for the video, always wondered about stuff like this!

  • Looks like a good time...I dont much care for the helmet when i ride ...just the other states require one tho...thanks for sharing..

  • If you're being charged by mad bikers don't aim for the helmets. Aim for the chests.

  • omg never underestimate a medieval warbow with a bodkin, they werent made for piercing knight plate armor for nothing :o useless in the hands of a child however, u need to be a very strong fucker to use them :D

  • @bigbowbrum can i get a ditto to that above pm? would love some high quality bows to add to my collection... thanks!
