Didn't SP SPICE install Microsoft Office 2010 for every students already?
It should come with the new Equation editor which can be accessed through [Insert] -> [Equation] or Alt + =.
This feature is much more user friendly and fast. Some simple equation can be typed without using mouse click at all.

Its quicker / good to 'record' a macro to quickly pop up the Math Type box. I have set 'ALT + q' as the sequence to trigger.
