I was so excited for this movie... until the cast was revealed. This was supposed to be an opportunity for children of color. I'm a huge fan of Avatar, and that's why I refuse to support a movie that encourages white-washing for so-called higher profits in Hollywood.

I can't imagine Aang or Katara encouraging something like that. Can you?

Let me make this statement clear: racebending.com supports DIVERSE racial representation in the movie. To try and say we're doing something less is a sad and ineffective way to stump us.

Note: I did not audition for the role of Katara because:
-I look (and am) older than she is in Book 1
-I don't have an agent (and you need one to audition for Aang or Katara)
-I live in Canada; far, far away from the casting calls which happened in Philly, so I can't afford it.

*Yes I made this costume & sorry, it's not for sale! ^.^;

1) Asian actors should have the same opportunities to play Asian characters as white actors have to play white characters. There are many, many other scripts and opportunities for white actors in Hollywood. In a world that looks so clearly Asian, shouldn't Asian actors be allowed to live in it?

2) Yes I know the majority of the voice actors were white. Except voice actors aren't supposed to be exactly who they voice; meaning the voice actors in the Lion King were not actually talking lions. Way.

3) This is NOT reverse racism. If you think standing up for minority rights is deplorable, you need to go back to school. Also, to save yourself some embarrassment, please READ Racebending.com's aims before commenting on this video!

3) Yes, I know Dev Patel is brown, Indian, South Asian.
But did you know the original dark-skinned characters were the heroic Water Tribe? For goodness sake, the casting directors have white-washed the whole theme so that now all of the righteous heroes are white and the tyrannical villains are brown.
P.S. Shyamalan being South Asian doesn't negate the racism in the casting! That would be like saying Asians can't be racist. Or ignorant. One or both of those actions is taking effect here.

4) Contrary to popular belief, kids aren't stupid. They can process and accept ideas given to them by the people they look up to - their parents, their teachers and of course, their cartoon characters on TV. If kids express a preference for white actors, they weren't born with that preference, it was learned. Why not allow kids to accept actors of colors as heroes?

5) Hollywood has a long history of marginalizing minority actors and whitewashing properties like Avatar -- they'll only stop if we speak up and tell them that it's not okay, and that we won't stand for it.

  • OMG! u should've been katara!! u look just like her! and when i saw the movie the 2nd day it wuz out, i wuz soo mad that the ppl couldnt get the names right! they only got the name 'katara' right sokka's and aang's were all rong!

  • @T0B3Announc3d Ok i agree to 2 and 3, but the rest are kinda mean. She is standing up for something she believes in.

  • Yes I was a little pissed about the ethnic change. I like the Fire Nation being pale, just as I like the Water Tribes to have a darker skin tone. But really it was a decent movie. Not great, but decent. The thing is though Live Action movies usually suck. Just look at Dragon Ball Z. ~Native American Pride.

  • The movie was pretty terrible. I mean I really don't care if they have white actors or whatever. But they could have put at least a LITTLE more effort into making them look more like the charactors. But even if they DID look right, I honestly don't think it would have made the movie all that better.

  • Hey - "White washing" is a totally racist phrase... I'm just saying. hate cuts both ways... But don't worry m'dear, I promise, I will not see the Airbender movie!! I can not deny the pretty ones of any color, anything

  • Hi Katara! They dumped you for a whitegirl??????
