This is a little documentary made of a group of Indigenous dancers from different parts of Australia who made the trip to Nyinyikay' in NE Arnhem Land to learn about traditional Yolngu dance.
Terrence Gayparlani Gurruwiwi can be seen here showing how yirdaki is made. He's the guy in the blue sports singlet and sunglasses which seem to be a permanent part of him... I've rarely seen Terrence without his sunglasses and shiny fabric singlet!
Gayparlani is in my estimation the best yirdaki craftsman in Arnhem Land. I don't know too many other Yolngu craftsmen where community members actually pay cash to purchase an instrument he has made. I don't mean borrowing an instrument, or taking one without permission, or trading something for it. I mean to outright buy it.
In Djalu's May 2009 Rripangu Yirdaki Masterclass, the old man got Gayparlani to assist such is his respect for this young man's talents.

Hello there! :-) What a nice surprise. Yes I do LOVE Didgeridoo but I don't know how to play. Makes my lips itch just thinking about it :D but I do find the history a blessing. I hope to visit Australia one day and discuss the creation with the people. I believe these folks are blessed on our planet and deserve Love and respect. I find them to be beautiful.
