I would like to know who told this innocent girl that the Plena outfit was like that and she is also dancing Bomba to the wrong music! Please, make sure to teach the kids that Bomba has nothing to do with Plena, that the Plena was borned in Ponce in the 1900's and the Bomba was borned in the 1700's in the coasts around the island. They don not have similarities and the instruments and dancing are totally different.

This young dancer is quite "schooled" on the dance styles of Puerto Rico. So you can rest assured about her education. Tatiana is a local dancer who joined in with the other comparsas at a carnival celebrating the unveiling of Martorell's art display. If you've been to almost any festival in Puerto Rico, lately, you'll discover that the gamut of Boricua heritage is always represented, whether the dances or musics are similar or not.

The video shows a free-for-all, not part of the formal presentation. No where does it state that she is dancing bomba, or that she is dressed like a plena dancer. Though, quite skilled at Bomba dancing, Tatiana loves dancing to plena music, also. BTW, there are a lot of people who believe that La Bomba was born in Loiza; just as you were very specific about La Plena being from Ponce. However, both views are contentious, since current empirical research cannot prove nor disprove those assertions.

Also, there are some similarities between La Bomba and La Plena in that: both dances are rhythmically-driven; both rhythms rely on three distinct drums; both forms are from Africa; and both la bomba and la plena are crucial parts of the Puerto Rican culture. In the meantime, let us revel in the fact that some of our children have engaged themselves in learning about their culture and traditions.
