On March 24, 2009, Operation Patient Access held a panel discussion on Capitol Hill to focus on critical surgical access issues. Dr. Thomas C. Ricketts shared findings from a recent study on the shortage of surgeons in the U.S. More than half of all U.S. counties don't have an adequate supply of surgeons. If the trend continues as expected, more communities will face problems with access to surgical care. Dr. Ricketts is a professor at University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health, and co-director of the American College of Surgeons Health Policy Research Institute.
