"Zemestan" (Rafi Pitts, Iran, 2005) is about the struggle for survival of a generation: They can't find work in their own place, so they have to look elsewhere. Nevertheless, they are often disappointed and left empty-handed.

Amidst all its depressiveness, "Zemestan" contains at least one "magic moment", and at times it seems that it is worth a lifetime's striving to reach that illuminating goal. Although one starts to wonder about the point of all the hardships that one had to endure when it comes to the hopeless end.

Rafi Pitts was born in 1967 in Mashad/Iran as the son of an Iranian mother and a British father. The family emigrated in 1978, and Rafi studied film and cinematography in London. "Zemestan", an adaptation of of the story "Safar", by Mahmoud Dowlatabadi, is his third feature movie. It was presented as a competition entry in the Berlin Film Festival of 2006.

Music is by Hossein Alizadeh, Mohammad Reza and by Shajarian. Main actors include Mitra Hajjar, Ali Nicksaulat, Hashem Abdi and Zahra Jafari. This summary containing some of the most pivotal scenes is in Farsi with English subtitles
