imo yes although many will probably say no. The book was different in that it focused more on Jack's alcoholism and depression which had built up since he went on the wagon after breaking Danny's arm. The book is a bit silly imo, it features moving hedge animals and spooky fire hydrants (I kid you not) and the ending is very 'hollywood' in comparison to Kubrick's version, I wont spoil in case you decide to read it, he also wields a crocket mallet rather than an axe. It's worth a read though.

I know it sounds like I'm making it up but yeah it's true. Just type the shining & mallet into Google and you'll see for yourself. I think the axe was far more sinister but others disagree.

I was just reading on Wikipedia that Kubrick loved animals, and had many dogs and cats! He was sad when a family of bunnies were accidentally killed during shooting "Full Metal Jacket" & canceled shooting the rest of the day! He kept his kitties with him often in the editing room to spend more time with them. So cute! :):)
