Amelia -Exploring The Central Kalahari Desert, South Africa & Botswana

In The Heart of Wildest Africa

Excitement grew on my journey
I passed the Tropic of Capricorn
As I traveled into Moremi,
On the sandy riverbanks and wetlands
A Pride of Lions basked in the sun
Baboons and Monkeys jumped
Amongst a glade of tall Mopanes
Giraffes browsed in the trees
Hippopotami snorted in the Khwai River
Elephants ponderously lumbered on the trail

Captivated by exotic Birds singing
Surrounded by,
The extraordinarily impressive
Veritable Garden of Eden
And tremendous variety of animals
My memory,
Does not want to leave me
Communion with Nature
The smell on the hot breeze
In the heart of Wildest Africa

An Exotic Spring

As the unique trees
Started to unfold
The whole City transformed
Into glorious purple flowers

Surrounded by the trees
I walked in a flutter
Of a sweet smelling sea of blossoms
Unforgettable sunny days
In Jacaranda Citys exotic Spring

Sunset

It was hard to breathe
The ground was baked by the hot African sun
As I drove towards the Kalahari Desert
The sky and earth looked like they were on fire
So I stopped to watch that incredible sunset
As the sun reached the horizon
It spread colors all over the sky
Deep red, dark blue, bright yellow and orange
It touched my heart
Standing on the road in the middle of the Desert
No traffic, so quiet
Just nature and I
I fell in love, with the extraordinary African Land

Wildlife on the Kalahari

As the sun rose above the horizon
Wildlife on the Kalahari flourished with activity
The lions were roaring in the river bed
A distracted Jackal was turning his head
Left and right and screamed
Frightened Springboks jumped confused which way to run
A beautiful Leopard was stretching his legs in the branches
A Koori Bustard walked throughout the bushes -
With pride as if he was walking on clouds

A funny Ostrich was racing the car as I drove along
Meerkats were showing funny faces jumping up and down-
From hiding places under the ground
Amazed by a tiny Beetle-
Striving to push a huge dung ball over the hill
Exotic Butterflies were floating amongst the wildflowers
Intrigued by a giant nest hanging in a tree,
And fascinated by the loud sound of thousands of Birds
I really wish the inspiration of the wild animals -
On the Kalahari Desert will never end

The Kalahari Night

I was sitting by the fire
Watching the sunset
Fascinated by the absolute silence
I couldn't hear an animal
Not even a bird
Inspired by the incredible night sky

Sitting by the fire
The Kalahari beauty kept me awake
The ground frost in the morning
Melted by a spectacular sunrise
And from a distance, the sound of roaring lions
I will never forget

I Searched for You

From dawn to dusk far and wide I searched for you,
As you seemed to hide from my view
I recognized your silhouette from a distance
As you walked towards the river bed
I remember, your mane was coated
With remnants of your last meal,
As you drank quenching your thirst,
Then laid there peaceful and calm
On the ground in the shade

Uninvited I came very close to you
I stared into your beautiful eyes,
You were half asleep
I loved watching you as you mingled
With the rest of your Pride-
As you strutted so proudly in front with your distinguished mane-
Like a King, yes, you truly are,
The King of the Kalahari Desert!
And I thought, will I see my King tomorrow?
