Benzekri

Meeting on 30th June 2007 in Amsterdam in the memory of Moroccan human rights activist Driss Benzekri who died recently. He was one of the prominent political dissident and one of the many Moroccans who were illegally detained, imprisoned, tortured and ?forcibly disappeared? by state security forces under King Hassan II. Benzekri was a staunch supporter of human rights and democracy and spent 17 years in the prison for his stand and political convictions. In 2001 he was named chairman of the Consultative Council for Human Rights (CCDH), where he expanded the issue of human rights beyond simple politics, into the spheres of economics, society and culture. Benzekri was appointed head of the Equity and Reconciliation Commissio n which King Mohammed VI established in 2004. His work with the Commission concerned identifying instances of gross violations of human rights and the location of missing persons during the regime of the present King?s father. EMCEMO is ?using? the death of Driss Benzekri and the respect attached to his name amongst the Moroccan Diaspora, to keep up the pressure and focus on the issue of human rights in Morocco. In the first half of this one day meeting, EMCEMO would like to take up two issues: how can the legacy of Driss Benzekri be kept alive amongst the younger generation and secondly, how can the Moroccan Diaspora via it?s organisations provide concrete support to improving human rights situation in Morocco. The latter would involve developing projects which could be started in the near future. 50 people representing organisations from Europe (including the Netherlands) have been invited to this meeting. In the second half of the day, a public meeting would take place with music, poetry and speeches by prominent human rights activists, colleagues of Driss Benzekri from Morocco, and representatives of Dutch Government. It is hoped that the public meeting in support of human rights world wide would attract more youngsters and general public.
