GRITtv: Dr. Joycelyn Elders: Marijuana & Masturbation

Dr. Joycelyn Elders is no stranger to making controversial statements in public, so her support of California's Proposition 19, the marijuana legalization ballot initiative, shouldn't be surprising. After all, years ago she was ousted as Bill Clinton's Surgeon General after noting that a discussion of masturbation should be part of educating young people on avoiding HIV infection.

Elders joins us via Skype from Arkansas, where she is professor emeritus at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine and an associate at Arkansas Children's Hospital, to discuss marijuana legalization, the return of masturbation as a campaign issue, and the ongoing struggle for universal health care in the U.S. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Why is it so unsurprising that a rational, intelligent person such as Dr.Elders got fired for making a reasonable suggestion about the reality of human sexuality? In our political arena, anyone who points out facts and commonsense will be attacked, dismissed or just ignored. I sense this is changing a bit. The younger generations are less accepting than previous generations of propaganda and political spin. Ignorance was always the best weapon of the culture wars. It's time for ignorance to end.

I always suspected that this masturbation policy, so eloquently expressed by Ms Elders, was in fact a secret attempt by the Clinton administration to pave the way for some sort of bizarre tax. By the way what is the Obama administrations policy on masturbation. The man is strangely silent on this issue. With a great stateswoman like Elders blazing the trail his has no right to remain mute.

@KatrellEmo4 Religion, Government and socielty would rather you have a disease so they can treat it with drugs and have money coming out of you until the day you die. However, they make you feel that masterubation is wrong because you have less of a chance to get a disease which means they have less of a chance to get money from you until the day you die. So, while you are telling me, "IT FEELS WRONG", you need to ask yourself, WHO MADE ME FEEL THAT IT "FEELS" WRONG?

@KatrellEmo4 To tell children, DO NOT HAVE SEX WITH EACH OTHER until you are married and you can satisfy your sexual urges by masterbation, pleasing yourself. There is nothing wrong with it and you could save your life. If this was taught in the 50s,60s, 70s,80s,90s an on there could be millions of lives saved instead of people popping dangerous pills to stay alive. People are still dying from diseases so damn right it's necessary. She just had the chutzpa to do something.
