I am thinking about going out tonight and checking this out. Can you recommend a good dark beach to check this out. I live in the Clairemont area and I have easy access to all the good beaches...

absolutely beautiful... truly something id imagine to only see in heaven..

@LoghanCall there is a few different ways to see this... the churning waves from shore & glow-sand/kelp.. From a power boat... But from a Kayak on calm water, with minimal light pollution, its amazing... sting rays, flat fish, sharks and all kinds of sea creatures get lit up by the bloom.. You can see every curve and crease of their shape in full detail. Ones that move too fast look like fireworks shootin off through the water... its beautiful. Like boating on a sea of stars.

August 2011 was one of the brightest blooms in over a decade along the california coast, August 28th in particular. During the day, it looked like clean, clear blue ocean... at night it was glowing greenish blue as far as you could see, north, south & west... this can be seen along certain coastal areas, bays & even rivers on incoming tides, where there is little light pollution, or a dense enough bloom to be seen easily. The blooms on average start in July & can last all the way into December.

To debunk the myth here.. these organisms emit light from their bodies, the light does not actually represent the toxins associated with red tides, thought its an indicator of bloom density. These organisms are not only present where the red tide is visibly red, but they are also present where the water is seemingly clear and free of that awful red slick.. Though they are associated & apart of the red tide, Red Tides are not always red & Blooms of Dinoflagellates are also not always dangerous.

its most awesome when it lights up the horizon of the ocean, as far as you can see, like this... but even better is going out on the water, when its calm, on a kayak or stealthy boat.. its like boating on stars.. the fish shoot through the water around you like fireworks... and if you sit somewhere long enough you see in full detail bat rays, sharks, flat fish, and mysterious giant pulses of light from the deep.. very ghostly almost.. in my opinion its more amazing than the northern lights..

you gotta go the right time of year... i suggest the month of august for the california coast... usually at its most dense point by then..

the bioluminescence is caused by the toxins of dinoflagelletes (protists, small single cell organisms) it happens when there is a bloom, or population explosion, of dinoflagelletes in the ocean. They get stirred up and cause red tides which are bioluminescent at night.
This is definitely one of the better videos capturing the waves... its hard to catch on film... finally cameras are becoming more capable.. i wish someone would film the ghost rays...
