The State Departments International Visitor Leadership Program invited young Pakistani Parliamentarians on a visit to United States. The program seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S and Pakistan through young leaders. Voice of Americas Saqib Ul Islam talked to these young Pakistani Parliamentarians about their visit.
Sufian Yousaf (Member National Assembly from Karachi, Sindh) Talked about how these visitor exchange programs can help build a better understanding through people to people contact. He expressed his appreciation for United States government for arranging such visit through which young Pakistani leaders can be a part of the future policies in the South Asia region.
Asia Nasir, A female Member of Parliament from Quetta, Balochistan, said that the 51% female population of Pakistan is now getting their voice heard through 76 women parliamentarians in Pakistan. She further described this visit as an excellent opportunity for Pakistani women leaders to express their feelings about America on an International level.
Nur Alam Khan, Member of Parliament from Peshawar (North Western Province of Pakistan) believes that he is here to convey the feelings of Pakistanis to American government. He also commented on the negative propaganda in Pakistan about screening of Pakistanis in United States, that he never felt anything out of ordinary on his current visit. He said that, in the meetings with US officials and senators they talked about every possible aspect of Pak-U.S relationship and told the Americans that the young Pakistani leadership believes on negations and stability in South East Asia.
Nadeem Afzal Gondal, Member of National Assembly from Sargodha Punjab Province, expressed his gratitude for American efforts to help strengthen the democracy in Pakistan. But he also said that United States has been a big alley to the non-democratic governments in Pakistan in the past, and that the Unites States should change its policies to protect democracy and democratic values and in favor of Pakistani people not only governments.
