Phil Lynott and Grand Slam perform "Military Man" on the BBC, 11/7/1984. This was before the version Lynott did with Gary Moore on 'Run for Cover'.

I've always believed there was a lot of metaphors in this song that paralleled Lynott's life. Not that they don't exist in other songs, but this is a fantastic example.

  • i saw Grand Slam play Worthing, my 1st gig at 14, bizarrely i still have strong recollections of them, Phil was an awesome presence!!!

  • You lucky son of a bitch...and of course I mean that in the nicest, most respectable way possible.

Must of been a hell of a show. Makes me wish I was born 15 years earlier.

  • @Kirok I read a Bio of Phil online that said the record company's knew about Phil's lifestyle and didn't want to risk anything. I on other hand think they were crazy for not sighing them, they sound amazing.

  • @hendrixkixas maybe because no one liked the idea that thin lizzy would never form and peform again if grand slam were to succeed

  • @hendrixkixas Grand Slam were given a bad wrap by the media, mostly because of Phil's drinking and drug use problems. Apparently the masses of bad publicity made them fairly unpopular with record labels, despite being a great band.

  • I'm obviously older and this was the last gig I saw Phil at. He died not long after and, in contrast to previous years, he was in bad shape although his charisma never left him. I miss the guy.

  • I feel like I heard stories about them not being signed because of Phil's condition and how obvious it was that his life was a wreck... no label wanted to take the risk of him not following through... again, this is just something I vaguely remember hearing... not necessarily the truth,

  • We all often think of what might have happened to Phil if Grand Slam got a record deal, or if Thin Lizzy stayed together... I wonder what would have happened if Phil went straight into a solo career. People seemed eager enough for it. As soon as Grand Slam split up and he announced the prospect of 'The Philip Lynott Band' there was interest. Maybe it could have saved him.

  • Thank Him, Just Love Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy! One Day-on the Street - MAMA! - Take a look at your Boy! They Trained the Boy to kill & kill someone he Will.

He's a Military Man - they trained the boy to Die, ask no why. I Do Recomend: Solo in Soho

    My personal.
