Music has greatly been impacted by globalization through the use of social networking sites, like MySpace and YouTube. These sites allow aspiring musicians to reach a greater number of people than previously possible.
Many well-known artists have been discovered through their MySpace Music pages, where they are able to put out their own music and update fans of upcoming shows and album releases. Various record companies work with the site by looking for the next unsigned artist to make it big and advertising for popular musicians. MySpaces influence on todays music is exemplified through an interview with Ingrid Michaelson, who owes her success to the site, and Courtney Holt, the manager of MySpace Music. Not only has the face of contemporary music drastically changed, but also classical orchestral pieces can now be achieved in a completely modern way.
Tan Dun composed The Internet Symphony especially for YouTube by asking musicians from all over the world to send in videos of them playing his song with any instrument. The winners were voted via YouTube subscribers and were flown to Carnegie Hall to play as one orchestra.
Social networking sites have given talented musicians immense opportunities to connect with potential fans and become discovered by record companies. Prior to this age of globalization, the ways in which an artist could put themselves out in the public eye was severely limited. The popularity of both of these particular sites shows how one individual can connect with more people than ever.
