  • A friend of mine gives the plastic or terracotta container a good tap on the table. Pick up the container and drop it one-quarter inch off the ground. That should be enough to collapse any air pockets. Now just pour soil to fill the volume flush with the original root ball height. I use a small container to make it easy scooping and pouring.

  • Well do I pack it or don't I?

    Fair enough you can say no, and others can say yes.. but that doesn't help me.

  • Packing soil too much around roots will reduce precious air space, resulting in less root growth. Pack soil too little and you risk erosion or leaving large airpockets which will settle at first watering and leave the root ball exposed. So, how soft do you pack soil or potting soil?

  • ya it's very dependent on how fine you fill up the rest. need airspace, but not too much. once you get your hands in it tho you can see what the deal is. great vid!
