The U.S. Gov't faces heavy losses on the $81 Bil in aid to the auto industry, according to the congressional oversight panel for the $700 Billion Tarp program. It didn't give estimates but said most of the initial $23 Bil in Chrysler & GM aid is unlikely to be repaid. Recovering the aid depends heavily on shares of the company, the report said. The US gov't owns major stakes in both US firms. ~IBD

Its not that we should save more rather than consume more. The real problem is production, not savings nor consumption. The production must be in real goods, not services. These are goods that can be competitively sold in international markets. We hardly make anything anymore. Most of what we consume is produced overseas making us dependent on foreign willingness to continue to finance our deficit spending. "Saving" just means that the banks do the spending rather than the consumer.

medliberty-

You need to brush up on your economics. Although I agree we allow too much production to leave this country, services is where any advance industrial nation goes, not productions.

You would of been right to buy gold early part of 2008, sell it mid year and go long USD. In Nov. it would of been a good time to get into gold again. By March this year get out and long the dollar again.

Yes, I read somewhere that the only gold confiscated was the gold in people's safe deposit boxes at the bank. The people who had gold that kept it at home didn't get confiscated.

I wouldn't go around saying I just took my life savings and bought gold coins which are now at home. You never know who is reading these posts and I no longer trust my government.

PremiumWater: I totally agree with you on not trusting the gov't. I don't think I made it sound like the I'm going into gold at home (which I'm not). Thanks for the concern however.
