The Idaho National Laboratory, ground zero for America's energy research, has cut fuel use by a fifth since 2006. Through June 2009, INL fuel use is down more than 167,000 gallons from the same period three years ago. INL has saved about $300,000 this year alone at current fuel prices. In addition to utilizing a fleet of new hybrid vehicles, transportation managers have streamlined bus routes and coached drivers to reduce unnecessary idling.
