  • Over the years, I've really grown to have a lot of respect for hand tools. I did a project with a friend where we purposely only used hand tools, and only used materials that we could find. After building a 12' wooden windmill; not spending a dime, and using only hand tools...its amazing on how much more respect you have for them. Before the project; they were just hand tools to me. Now they are something much, much more. It taught me a lot about hand tools, and to build something from nothing.

  • Very cool! We would love to see a video of that windmill. Tape one and post it as a Video Response to this video.

  • Unfortunately, the windmill had to be taken down a long time ago. We made the blades out of sheet metal which came from an old shelf that no one wanted anymore. During a windy day, it flew off, and the people I live with made a big deal out of it. So I had to take it down.

I have pictures of it though, if you would like to provide an email :-)

  • Would love to see the photos! You can send them to me via a contact form at my website. You will see at the top of every page an Ask Tim link. Click that.

  • Yeah right buy quality tools, Ryobi is NOT a quality tool.

  • You are entitled to your opinion. Is Ryobi the *best* power tool? No. Have those tools I featured in the video held up well in my testing? You bet they did. Can I confidently say they were quality when this video was taped? You bet. Is it possible for the quality to change? Absolutely. This video was not taped this year.......... It is nearly 8 years old

  • very good job tim :D . My father always told me to have 2 of each tool, because you never know. What soldering iron do i need for soldering electronic components? (computer circuits). Because there are some types which cause electromagnetic interference and can damage the circuits. Thanks Tim and keep up the good work :D

  • You are most welcome. Spread the word about AsktheBuilder videos.

  • I have to agree with Tim. I know a bit about tools, but I just did some torch-and-solder plumbing armed with only a minute and a half of Tim's help. Went great - thanks Tim!

  • I agree. Buy QUALITY tools, you might think your saving money but your just adding a big headache. 30ft tape is a little heavy I actually usually work with a 16' fat max but I do have a 25' in my box. When your 30' up on a ladder measuring 12 feet or more the last thing you need is a cheap tape measure that wont stand out that far.
