We know this government is two-faced at the best of times but apparently they want to send people on benefits to work at places like Tesco, Primark and other retails as what is essentially free labour for these places.
The people are paid just £67.50 or less for 30 hours of work (Nearly full-time) for four weeks. That's £80 less than the minimum wage. Now I agree that people on the dole should probably not be paid the minimum wage but this could be seen as state-funded free labour to corporations who have enough money to hire more people themselves.
Moreover £67.50 or less a week for that amount of working hours is not enough for most people to live on and would get in the way of any of these people possibly applying for interviews in full-time jobs.
I'm all for giving people on the dole work experience for jobs to put in their CV and as someone who fears not getting employment when I leave university, I'll dead in favour of it - but how much skill is really needed to stack shelves? Many of my friends and I have been rejected from some of these places for 'not having enough experience'. Turns out what they mean is they don't want to have to pay is the minimum wage when they can get free labour.
Apparently only Tesco has said that the best people are then offered a proper job after the four weeks, while places like Primark refused to comment.
Good video - very eloquently put!
