From the 1980 "Rarities" vinyl lp. This is the rare version of Penny Lane with the horn riff at the end.

  • Please note that this is the STEREO version. WABCRadio77 offers the ORIGINAL MONO version with trumpet ending as it was played when released to the public with "Strawberry Fields" in February 1967! Of course, if you prefer stereo, this transfer is superb, and thanks for posting it! It's from the box set of remasters, I'm guessing?

  • @binkle1 I do not own the boxed set! Like the description says, it is was converted from vinyl to mp3. That is my 'Rarities' album you see in the photo, which I bought shortly after it was released by EMI in 1980. The description on the back cover for the track says, "Capitol has taken a stereo version of the song and tagged on the rare final notes..."

  • @binkle1 cont.--You are right, the horn riff version was only released to radio stations in the US in mono (also from the track description). That's what made this a 'rarity' in 1980!

  • @bze2nlz4 --The mono DJ promotional copy with the ending horn riff was how we all first heard the song on radio and I recall being (mildly) disappointed at the released version. Always wondered why Capitol/EMI didn't just include the DJ promotional version in mono on this LP, rather than essentially just manufacturing a 3rd version of the song.

  • @JD00014 I agree!

  • at the start of my NEW BeatlesandBeyond show, you can hear the earlier version, with oboes playing the solo part, not the trumpet which was added later - enjoy folks!

  • @zoobopify When this album came out in 1980 the point of this version was to combine both rare versions into this one song. The true true rarity which has never been released is the stereo version of the trumpet ending (not counting the one on Anthology).

  • @spiritomb -- But it is the mono version that is the true rarity.Since the Rarities LP includes other mono cuts, it should have included this one.

  • @JD00014 They made it stereo for this release because a true stereo version was never released before this in the US.

  • @BOBOBOTT Yes! (Not to be confused with the Dave Mason from Traffic.)

  • I have always loved that extra horn riff at the end! The song just is not complete without it. Cheers for the Capitol Rarities!

  • I have heard this version on the radio before a few years ago, but only as part of a Beatles weekend tribute or something like that. Nice!

  • Excellent. That horn playing of David Mason has to be the most recognizable trumpet solo ever recorded. McCartney may have devised the melody line for it but it was Mason who made it so beautifully real. This is one of the best rock tracks ever written and performed. Even my Mother way back in the 60's thought this was a truly remarkable song. That extra trumpet at the end should have been the official release. It simply motivates you to play the song again when it ends.
