Heel-and-toe is a driving technique used mostly in performance driving. It involves operating the throttle and brake pedals simultaneously with the right foot, while facilitating normal activation of the clutch with the left foot.
It is used when braking and downshifting simultaneously (prior to entering a turn), and allows the driver to "blip" the throttle to raise the engine speed and smoothly engage the lower gear.

Left-foot braking is the technique of using the left foot to operate the brake pedal, leaving the right foot dedicated to the throttle pedal.
At its most basic purpose, LFB can be used to decrease the time spent between the right foot moving between the brake and throttle pedals, and can also be used to control load transfer.

This footage was made using G25 with its pedals mounted firmly.

Both "Andy Pastore's brake pedal load cell" mod and Leo Bodnar's box (aka "Bodnar box") were used. Great thanks to them.

These laps aren't fast to show you the techniques better.

  • @boca10205 actually, no. Sometimes when you need to manage weight transfer very gently LFB is the technique you need even with cars with manual gearboxes.

  • when you come into turn 1 .... from what I see you gear down twice at once

so i guess your at maximum braking as your downshifting? ... is this the fastest way on this track to enter turn one.... because this seems to be my slowest corner

I'm doing the mazda cup and i'm 2 seconds off the pace of most of the better drivers

  • @Wedge4Life Yes, I'm braking there using "threshold braking", a technique to brake as hard as possible without locking wheels. Taking about shifting, there are different points of view how you should downshift. In "Speed Secrets" Roy Bentley advices to skip gears on downshifting if possible. For example, is you're going on 4th and need to shift to 2nd you should skip 3th gear on H-pattern gearbox and shift straight to 2nd. But I prefer not to skip gears to feel deceleration tempo better.

  • man, great job here bro 10/10!

  • @EJ4060 thank you, I'm still mastering)

going to show driving other cars with different types of gearboxes soon.

  • I thought left foot braking was only good for cars with no clutch pedals.

  • @aguchotron i already know that they do it in the real world.. a common trait for winners in the F1 racing world... Im just saying go out and do it in a real car now!!! should be more fun to watch.. you know what i mean ?

  • @tenjinnim that's a real driving technique, they do that in the real world...

  • @flylynx2 o0o0oh left foot braking !!! something i dont see a lot these days... now do it in the real world !!!

  • The only time I've ever seen drivers skip gears is in endurance style racing trying to be as gentle on the transmission as possible. I agree I like the feel of the single downshifts.

  • yea i got the Cup car and Watkins Glen, i love it on road courses. i dont have the cluch or H shifter but its still fun with the force feedback. I got the Logitech Driving Force GT
