The movie is a bit controvercial in terms of sexual exposure. Lee was concerned if the Taiwanese can see what he trying to explore and not see this movie as an "A movie." Taiwanese audience got it!! They understood the issues Lee is trying to explore.

Unfortunately, the mainland Chinese government either does not understand it or does not think that's more important than sexual exposure.

過度性暴露只是藉口，關鍵是一個愛國的中國女學生被一個日本漢奸­性虐待，以獲取情報，這在民族意識高漲的當代中國，後果可想而知­。張意謀早年的菊豆偷情情節不輸色戒。李安哭可能是想，偽裝這麼­深還是被識破（如果將湯唯改成具共黨背景，和雖利用美色但最後一­刻沒被得逞並獲取重要情報或殺了漢奸，但這樣又太狗血不符合李安­的大師身份）

He cries because he was about to leave Taiwan, his motherland that he loves. Ang Lee is a Taiwanese who lives in the US most of the time for shooting movies. That's why everytime he goes back to taiwan, he gets only little time to stay and when he leaves he cries.
