As a Kiva Fellow I travel to the rural countryside to interview Kiva borrowers. This video was shot while traveling on the back of a motorcycle in the Dominican Republic. I had just left a batey where I conducted an interview.

For those not familiar with the term batey, it is a rural community of barrack style housing provided by sugar cane growers. These communities have very limited resources and are (often) completely surrounded by sugar cane fields.

The sugar cane cutting season is from November to April, and the majority of families who live on bateys live primarily on the money they make during the sugar cane cutting season.
