Jake Webster has been carving since 1974 and painting for at least a decade prior to that. He travelled the world before putting down roots in northern Indiana more than 15 years ago.
Most artists I know come from the small town world. That gift doesnt change because we live at home, Jake says. In my case my art is enhanced by where I live. Indiana has some of the best limestone in the world. We have some of the best wood in the world.
Jakes finished carvings express the humanistic quality of people, their communities and the environment. He strives to create conversation, not just beautiful art. As a former art educator, Jake knows art helps people, especially kids, talk about things that are difficult. It gives us a way of communicating without pointing fingers or shaking our fists.
While he uses a traditional method of direct carving, Jake also adds recycled nails, bones and scrap metal to his sculptures and uses paper, rags, and product packages in his collage and paintings. When he can, he even uses found wood from fallen logs and scrap limestone from the quarries.
The wind provides the wood, Jake explains. Ive been recycling since before it was cool.
Jake gives back to his community by curating exhibits and holding art-related workshops for adults and children. His work also can be found in many private and public collections.
