Today's wars do exist, but in reality they're only prep for the big one that's coming, this whole world peace thing makes everyone (in terms of nations) think that there's no need for military power anymore, and when everyone has their pants down, that's when the shit is going to hit the fan. Don't be so naive as to think that everything in the world is all sunshine and bunnies...

Speaking from an Airman (enlisted AF), Navy promotes folks the quickest. I went in as E-3, after two and a half years, I was still a E-3 while this Sailor I knew went from E-1 to E-4 in that time frame.
