There is something bracingly honest in Gameloft's Modern Combat 2; the biggest publisher of iPhone games is making no bones about copying Modern Warfare in this brand-new shooter. Now, if the action was slipshod or poorly paced, the whole thing would be laughable. But Gameloft's shooter is genuinely the best in the App Store, eclipsing the previous high water mark: its very own N.O.V.A.

Plot matters little, but I will give Modern Combat 2 this: it's certainly a lot more believable than Infinity Ward's last yarn. Here, you are a trooper busted out of captivity by a fellow soldier, soon to be thrust into the heart of a major campaign in the War on Terror. Your hero trots the globe, from the humid jungles of South America to the frigid forests of former Soviet bloc states. None of this is really important. It's the scenarios that truly count, such as trying to stop an RPG gunner from destroying a convoy or stealthily creeping through snow pack to snipe unsuspecting terrorists. Every single mission in Modern Combat 2 offers a fresh situation (within the context of the game, I mean -- there are not exactly any new ideas here), and that's what keeps you going forward.

However, there is quite a bit of predictability along the way. Quick-time reaction events? They're here. Turret breaks where you jump behind a cannon and lay to waste wave after wave of enemies? Check.

Control is king in the first-person shooter scene, and Gameloft excels here. If you have played any of Gameloft's previous shooters, you will feel right at home with the basic virtual stick and buttons/drag-to-look scheme. It's still is one of the best control schemes in the genre (although Archetype was also remarkably well done, too), and Gameloft includes the opportunity to customize it to your liking. I had to scoot the fire button off to the side a little more, for example, because I sometimes accidentally shot my gun when I meant to look to the right. But if you have an iPhone 4 or new Touch, you'll love the gyro controls. Talk about precision. After a little practice (and some help with aim assist), I was a headshot machine when finding a relatively safe corner and looking through sights or a scope.
Gameloft was not content to only tread in Infinity Ward's footsteps for Modern Combat 2's story mode. Online multiplayer borrows heavily from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The persistent perk system is in effect here, too, as almost every kill or assist in online multiplayer adds experience to a growing account. As you cross level thresholds in modes like deathmatch and capture the flag, you unlock extras such as new weapons in your armory which further increase your online badassery. Does this have the potential to skew the balance of online play? Of course it does, just like Modern Warfare. I wouldn't necessarily buy it myself, but it might be cool if Gameloft sold off some of the perks as an In App Purchase somewhere down the line after the early fans have maxed their stuff out the old fashioned way. Getting online in Modern Combat 2 is breezy through Gameloft Live, but now that we're in the era of Game Center, I do hope Gameloft (and everybody else) embraces a unified identity. By all means, keep your services going. I have no beef with Gameloft Live, Plus+, Open Feint, etc. But the whole point here was to make it easier to keep track of friends.

No matter the device you use to play Modern Combat 2, it's an attractive game. But if you have a Retina display? Wow. This is easily Gameloft's best effort yet, with ultra-sharp visuals that look remarkable. Faces no longer look like textures stretched around a football, but like an actual person. (Characters even have individual fingers!) The environments are bright and colorful, and Gameloft uses some cool camera effects such as motion blurring and zoom-to-kill tracking for impressive headshots.
