Watch cement tiles being made. The pigmented cement is hand-poured into the patterned mold. The mold is removed. Two additional layers of cement are added for strength and water absorption. The bolted frame holds the cement in place until it is hydraulically pressed. Removing the frame exposes the tile!

  • But I see them rubbing something on the plate what is that?

  • @nanadede1952 They often sprinkle cement on top to absorb any water.

  • What is used so the tile comes off the plate?

What is the difference between second and final layer?

  • @nanadede1952 The middle layer mixture is designed to absorb water from the pattern later. The final layer (back of tile) has slightly larger aggregate and less ability to absorb water.

  • What is used so the tile comes off the plate?

  • @nanadede1952 The tile rests on a steel plate and is formed on the sides by a tile 'frame' which is also made of steel. The frame is unbolted and removed. The tile slides off the steel plate easily.
