Flame treating is a very effective means of surface treatment. When applying an ink or coating to a product, the surface energy of the product must be equal to or greater than that of the ink or coating to get good adhesion. Flame treating raises the surface energy (dyne level) of the treated product to the required level.

Flame treating will not leave markings on the product like you can get with plasma surface treatments and is more reliable because plasma treating is sensitive to changes in the composition of the material being treated.

Flame treating is much more versatile than corona treating in terms of the products that can be treated due to the requirements for the ground and electrode configuration of corona treaters.

Systematic Automation manufactures a semi-automatic, stand-alone flame treater to be used prior to the product being placed on the printing or coating machinery. The flame treater consists of an eight-station rotary indexer (32 inch diameter) with a 6 inch diameter platen at each station. A four-station indexer and larger platens for treating larger diameter products is also available. A vacuum in the center of the platens holds most products on the machine without the need for any tooling. The operator loads the product onto the platen and the product will be indexed to the flame station safely located at the back of the machine. The product stops directly in front of the flame, spins 360 degrees to treat the entire circumference, and then advances. Because the product stops in front of the flame and spins around completely, you get the most even surface treatment.

An automatic unloader is available which pushes the treated product off of the machine and down a ramp. The automatic unloader is suitable for products that are not easily broken or damaged such as plastic goods.

Flame treaters to work with natural gas or propane are available.
