Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

As a gay man in California, I am terrified of what will happen when the court issues its decision in Perry vs. you. I have a house, family, and two small children to protect, and tensions are running high. Regardless of what Judge Walker determines, when he announces his ruling, there will be some who lash out against their neighbors with physical violence.

It has already started. In response to the uptick in gay bashings this spring, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck explained that "the LAPD often notices a spike in gay-related hate crimes whenever Proposition 8 news makes major headlines."

I have no doubt that those who would deny me my right to marry will not think twice about punching me in the face, running me down with their car, or setting my house on fire.

Governor Schwarzenegger, since you started this with your veto of AB 43, your neutral stance on Proposition 8, and tacit support of the hateful language in the Republican Party Platform, will you speak out now to help deflate this tension, and possibly save lives?

I wish you would voice your support of lesbian and gay Californians and their right to equal treatment under the law, and denounce those who deny freedom to others, especially the Opponents of Equality who operate through both quiet intimidation and overt physical violence.

  • Would you happen to know who Mr. James Hartline is?

  • @bimboblacky yes, he's a San Diego Whackadoodle. Why do you ask?

  • My husband and I used a process called "gestational surrogacy" to have our kids, two wonderful souls who wouldn't be in this world if it weren't for us and the gifts God gave us.

It may be rude for us to assume that the Opponents of Equality would cause us harm because of our "faggotry" however history has shown that people like you - exactly like you - who dehumanize your fellow gay and lesbian citizens, are the ones who wind up running over and burning people, thinking they aren't human.

  • don't be terrified i support you! i think people should marry who ever they fall in love with.

  • @signab43 GROSS!

  • @signab43 Well, may-B a lot of people who R not necessarily "4" (or openly "4") gay marriage won't PHYSICALLY harm anybody, and probably wouldn't even DREAM of it. But U should 2 B careful what U SAY about others, *precisely* B-cause, as Mr. Limbaugh (ugh) is so fond of saying, "Words MEAN things." And HIS rant about this Proposition ruling and how "the minority is not allowed 2 break the law" is utter BS, sorry. Susan B. Anthony openly broke the law, and now she's a heroine! Rosa Parks, 2.

  • I heard something about a speech that individual made TO the San Diego City Council about how "corrupt" they were, etc. etc. etc. to even say much of anything (either way) about the In Re Marriage Cases filing to the Supreme Court of the State of California. A "Whackadoodle," eh? Okay...so far, anyway, I have NOT heard of him being caught with a "Rent Boy" or giving out NUDE MASSAGES during the course of involvement with an ex-gay reparative therapy program...did I MISS something, perhaps?

  • Yes, marriage is "churchy" and my church doesn't have any problem with marrying me. I wish people could understand that, and get over it, and let people get married if they want to.

But to your original point, I would rather have people throw acid on me than bully me from the anonymity of the voting booth, too cowardly to show their faces, and pretend that somehow when they take away peoples' happiness, they are doing something "righteous" or "not hurtful."

    You're quite a "friend."

  • @signab43 People all have differing opinions, and what I ment by harming is they wont do physical harm to you. The only reason I believe marriage is more churchy than anything, thats why it originated from the bible, and thats why most people use priests. But, I believe anyone needs a little paper, or some rings to know that they are with a person they truely love.

  • @signab43 I know you are pretty upset, and I fully understand why (I have GOOD, actually GREAT, friends who went through the exact same "S-star-star-T" in my (other) state). However, I wish to humbly remind you of the statement from the Cross itself: "Father, forgive them, for they KNOW NOT what they do." Having said that, here's hoping that this person *will* "get a clue" (or 2, or 3, etc.) and finally REALIZE what it is is he/she/they ARE doing wrong. I believe it's happening, albeit slowly.

  • @tagg9111 when you say that you aren't harming me, it makes me sad, because the reality from my perspective is much different. When you are ready to trade in your "marriage" for a "domestic partnership," then we'll talk. Until then, I wish you would stop teaching my kids that their parents are deviants; stop preaching that your love is more worthy than my love; and stop telling your gay friends that they cannot participate in our economy and society because of who they love. Hate is hate, hater.
