The octopus is protected by many animal cruelty acts, including the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. Amongst many of the protective provisions listed, one of them states that surgery may not be performed without anesthesia on the octopus. If science views the octopus as a protected species against animal cruelty and experimentation, I'm not sure that chopping off its tentacles and eating it bit by bit falls in line with this train of thought.
