In a new study, researchers at the Moores Cancer Center and Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, UC San Diego used a complex computer prediction model to determine that intake of vitamin D3 and calcium would prevent 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer annually in the US and Canada. The researchers model also predicted that 75% of deaths from these cancers could be prevented with adequate intake of vitamin D3 and calcium. Dr. Cedric Garland, UCSD School of Medicine, lead researcher on the study discusses the implications of this finding and the proposed actions. Vitamin can not be patented by drug companies because it's a naturally occurring hormone, not a true vitamin.

I would usually agree with your healthy skepticism. Vitamin D is cheap & not patentable. Drug companies hate that!

Drug companies don't sell vitamins, not enough money to be made. Potentially most people shouldn't lack vitamin D, but they do. I don't drink milk, I don't go out in the sun. Also, the 400 mg daily requirement is too low. Vitamin D supplements are avialable 2 months supply for less than $10 hardly anyone is getting rich. If you don't want to take vitamins, hey, it's a free country, but your comment is wrong and not well thought out.

Uh, 57% of Americans DO LACK Vitamin D, 92% of African Americans are Vitamin D deficient. Do your homework before you comment.

It's not only that drug companies can't make much money out of vitamins, they are actually a threat to their profits. Imagine if everyone was getting adequate Vit D: the improvement in the population's health would cost billions of dollars in lost revenue from expensive drugs. It makes you wonder if some studies attacking vitamins are funded directly, or indirectly, by multinational drug companies.

Most Americans poison themselves with one substance or another. Are we going to outlaw all the other toxic substances in our food, water, products? Did you know that there are cultures that smoke tobacco that don't get lung cancer? Some researchers think that the cause is other substances that are added to the tobacco that causes cancer.

Guess drug companies do sell Vitamin D now, 2011. MFG "Break". I was prescribed 50,000 units, capsules, to take one, once a week, then I do a followup lab in two weeks to check my D levels. I suppose it's better than nothing. The pharmacist said I should take my routine OTC VitD of 2000 per day as well as the prescribed 50K Units per week. Needless to say I conducting my own research first. Thanks for the info.

We will NEVER eliminate cancer until we BAN THE ILLEGAL TOBACCO DRUG! (Illegal, because it is illegal to POISON PEOPLE, no matter how slowly you do it.)

BAN THE ILLEGAL TOBACCO DRUG, NOW!

IT'S ACTUALLY VITAMIN "D3" FOLKS, IT WORKS MUCH MUCH BETTER IN YOUR BODY AND FOR YOUR SYSTEM THEN VITAMIN D IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. DON'T BELIEVE ME, DO THE RESEARCH FOR YOURSELF AND GET THE REAL STORY, ALL THESE "EXPERTS" SHOULD KNOW BETTER THAN THIS.
