Recorded in Michael Finnican's studio in San Francisco, California, Sounds From The Mat is a modern adaptation of Yoga music. As an American born composer, Michael Finnican bridged the gap between Yoga and contemporary American music. The concept of Sounds From The Mat is based on compositions that emotionally motivate the listener without pulling them away from their practice. However, in its simplest sense Sounds From The Mat is music that can be enjoyed outside the Yoga studio like any other album.

Sounds From The Mat has an organic feel as a result of only using actual instruments and not using any digitally produced sounds. Michael Finnican plays all the instruments on Sounds From The Mat (except for vocals by Robin Yukiko on tracks 4 & 10)
