Beryl Bender Birch, spiritual teacher and yoga therapist,is the author of Power Yoga, the classic training manual for asana practice for Ashtanga Yoga; Beyond Power Yoga, which theorizes a relationship between the eight limbs of yoga and the chakras; and Boomer Yoga, which illustrates how to create a yoga plan that works for maturing adults.

Birch has been an avid student of yoga and the study of consciousness since 1971, and studied with Pattabhi Jois, founder of Ashtanga Yoga, from 1987 to 1990. With degrees in philosophy and comparative religion, she has traveled extensively in India and has been teaching classical yoga and training yoga teachers as "spiritual revolutionaries" since 1980. In 2000, Beryl Bender Birch was named by Yoga Journal as one of only seven American women in their "Innovators Shaping Yoga Today" issue.

Birch teaches yoga throughout the world and is the director and founder of The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute in East Hampton, New York, and Vermont. She is also a founder of the Give Back Yoga Foundation, which provides yoga to underserved communities and offers developmental grants to yoga teachers for community service projects.

  • I think yoga and meditation used to be the same and still is for some and in India. Otherwise thera are no comparison between those in the west who do yoga for fitness and relaxation and for example serious practising of Buddhist meditation to reach Enlightment.

  • Oh my gosh. I'm so happy you have a video of her. Years and years ago, well over a decade now, I somehow found the discipline and patience to work through her Power Yoga book and practice it daily. My life had changed more quickly than I was prepared for. I look back and realize that her teachings were a catalyst for my ability to confront many soul wrenching challenges to serve my community. I was prepared for a boot camp for the soul so to speak... I had my breath as a force to heal.

  • Great. Great. Great. Period. Thanks so much for what you do. May you always be aware that peace is with you at all times in this life and the next.

  • "Breathe... and pay attention" - thankyou for this wonderful post :)
