Born to wealth and power second only to royalty, you find your training in both diplomacy and war put to the test when your father's castle is betrayed from within on the very night your elder brother leads the family's forces to war.

Originally, the outpost of Highever was held by the Elstan Family, cousin of the Howes, arls of Amaranthine. In the age of the towers, Bann Conobar Elstan was murdered by his wife, Flemeth, thus ending the bloodline. Sarim Cousland captain of the guard of Conobar's, took the lands and title.

The Couslands declared their independence from Amaranthine, starting a war lasted 30 years. when the war ended, Highever was on its own and in possession of half the land that had once been southwestern Amaranthine.

Highever became a teyrnir during the black age, at that time the Couslands held only the minor title of "bann", during the lycanthrope plague Haelia Cousland gathered the lords together under her banner to drive the werewolves out of their lands, earning herself the title of teryna.

During the unfication by Calenhad, Teryna Elethea Cousland battled against Calenhad to maintain Highever independence, when Calenhad's army reached Highever, Teryna Elethea led the local banns against him, but Calenhad won, after Elethea's men were defeated, Calenhad asked her to swear fealty, thus able to retain the title.

During the rebellion against Orlais, several battles were fought near of highever. The Couslands supported the rebellion, but Howe sided with Orlais; by that Couslands were forced to seize harper's ford before it was all over. In keeping the town Couslands drove Orlais from its lands.

The Cousland's involvement in the Fifth Blight was intended to be a great one, were it not for Rendon Howe's betrayal. His men infiltrated Highever and struck down the Teyrn Bryce Cousland and Teyrna Eleanor. The eldest sibling, Fergus had already began marching to Ostagar, but remained missing after King Cailan's defeat.

You meet Ser Gilmore after exiting the main hall in Castle Cousland, where he presents you with the quest. Proceed north to the kitchen to initiate a discussion with Nan the cook. Enter the pantry and fight your first battle against approximately nine giant rats. They are easy kills, especially with Ser Gilmore and Dog's help. After the rats are dead, Ser Gilmore leaves your party and Dog remains. Talk to Nan again to complete the quest.

If you try to head to Fergus before this quest is completed, you will run into your mother, who is engaged in conversation with Lady Landra, Dairren and Iona. She will not let you past her until you have dealt with your dog.

Ser Gilmore makes a remark about how slaying Giant Rats reminds him of the beginning of his childhood stories - This is a nod to Baldurs Gate where one of the first quests you get is to fill Giant Rats.

@MasterOfTheVoids I've wanted the name of this song for agers and i couldnt find it anywhere. But one day i was at this place and a Dj played something that had it in so i asked him what it was.. Its called. E Nomine Mitternacht... Its alittle weird but it does have this part in it... I dunno if its the original song but its the nearest i have been able to find.

After the party retreats to Morrigan's home, the Warden has the option to order the companions to look for him. Morrigan will say it is impossible to go looking without any sort of guidance, and so the plan is dropped.
