@jaymack4jram upon writing and recording the music, you already have the copy rights, there is no process. What you do when you use a distributer like cdbaby is you grant them permission to reproduce and distribute, ie the right to copy. As I understand it, the copyright priveledges you give to cdbaby are not exclusive, so you are also free to sell your music anywhere else
If someone steals your music that's where the legal process comes into play, because then you get to sue the fuckers!

i have my own music, do i have to go through the library of congress to have my music copyrighted. or going through cd baby takes care of everything

That's a good question and point you make. I've personally have gone that route, but it's no good and a waste of time and artistic sacrifice. You're right, one can be successful at it, but very risky and time consuming to attempt to go solo like that. The only reason to have a middle man is this: He's an awesome representative, has the customers you need ready and set to go and is reliable. Not only that, but you can have your own website next to that. Anyways, good point. Peace.
