Artificial intelligence. The ghosts' movements are determined by certain rules that they cannot violate. So if you know what the rules are you can predict what they're going to do.

That's the reason why the patterns "work"... if you go the same route at the same time, the ghosts will do the same thing. But the problem with patterns is that if you screw up the pattern by a thousandth of a second, usually, you can't continue where you left off. That's why it's better to learn the ghost AI.
