My arrangement of Squire Woods' Lamentation on the Refusal of his Halfpence by O'Carolan.

In 1722 Ireland ran out of low-value copper coins, and William Woods was given licence by English parliament to produce them. The Irish didn't like this idea and boycotted the coinage. This piece was written the same year to commemorate the boycott.

This video was recorded in high-definition with a Canon XH-A1 camcorder, and edited in Sony Vegas and Adobe Audition. I exported a standard-definition version which is the version you see here.

If you want to see better-looking versions you can go to http://www.vimeo.com/731083 and the high definition version is much, much better than YouTube quality. You can also download that in standard or hi-def to keep on your own machine.

If you want to see examples of the actual coinage, here's a page about the "Woods Halfpenny": http://tinyurl.com/3chgs6

Enjoy!

  • This book does already exist, it is by Turlough O' Carolan (1670-1738). DAs buch ist eines aus der Serie "harpa mundi".

  • @TheWhooly Carolan wrote melodies only, so every harpist will play their own arrangements. I think kpskfi was asking if I would make a book of my version of this, and I will - I'm working on it but it is not available yet. Any harpist is of course free to make their own arrangements, or learn my arrangement by ear (as long as they credit me with it).

  • Mr. Harmer, you should make a book of your arrangements. They're all fantastic!

  • @kpskfi thank you! I'm slowly working on a book!

  • I do so love all your harp solos. I hope that you will post more of them :) What a talent.

  • Thank you! I've just altered the details in the "more" link to give a link to a high-definition version. It's really worth a look as the picture is much, much better. Will do more, promise!! Glad you liked it and thanks for your comment.

  • Dear Sir, you have a great talent!!!! May god bless you and may God bless irish music!!!

  • I like this beautiful tune, and your playing is great!!!

I played it on acoustic guitar several years ago, so I will upload in near days.

    Thanks.

  • Thank you! This scene is just set in my living room - one light and a candle. As a matter of interest I found it affected my playing - which made it a real pleasure to do. It made it feel very quiet, and it was about 1am by the time I finished it.
