Burleson helped its playoff chances Friday night with a 42-28 district win over Fort Worth Paschal at Farrington Field.
Big plays from both offenses marked the game, but Burleson ended up with more of them. The Elks (3-6, 2-3 District 3-5A) had two one-play drives of 68 and 70 yards. Burleson had five rushing plays of 30 or more yards and three completions of more than 10. At the end of the night, Burleson gained more than 550 yards, 435 on the ground.
The Panthers (3-7, 0-6), who ended their season, had their share of offense. Paschal ended the game with 351 yards, including 306 from quarterback Brian Gallagher.
A reverse flea-flicker from Sasha Lovett to Trevoy McCarver took the Panthers to the Burleson 10 and set up a touchdown pass from Gallagher to Lovett with 21 seconds left in the first half to tie the game at 21.
Paschal looked capable of keeping up with Burleson in a shootout during the first half. Gallagher produced 206 passing yards off 16 completions before halftime, including 12 of 10 yards or more.
The second half, though, belonged to Burleson.
The Elks began their first drive with a 56-yard run from James Owen, who ended the night with 255 rushing yards. Quarterback Brice Warren added a 21-yard scamper during the touchdown drive, which put the Elks up 28-21.
Owen scored on Burlesons next drive on a 47-yard run, and Warrens 70-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Houston put the game out of reach with 7:53 left.
Prior to Fridays offensive outburst, Burlesons longest play from scrimmage had been less than 50 yards. The Elks also crushed their previous season-high for yards gained and points scored (27).
