What is Modernism/Postmodernism?

Postmodernism: Let's all go back to the "good old days" before modern medicine and the spectacular success of science, when most people lived short lives of endless drudgery subject to the whims of their tyrannical kings and churches. Oh yeah, I can see the appeal of such nostalgia -- NOT!!

@willhum I'm aware of this BUT I am merely pointing out a flaw in THIS VIDEO, not in postmodernism as a concept. They say in this people were disillusioned after two world wars. This simply isn't the case in any of the material I have read on postmodernism because it saw prosperity post-WW2. And to that end, you've even supported my argument. I know what it IS, I merely contest this video's representation of its context

@taxiturtle If you know your history you will know that the 1950s were a time of Economic rebuilding after WW2, of increasing economic prosperity but fairly stagnant social norms. its not till the late 60's that the status quo gets challenged. Vietnam, Civil rights, women's rights, 68 student protests in Paris, swinging London, LSD etc etc. Its about a new generation challenging the norms/assumptions of previous generations.

@willhum Yes but that doesn't explain why it prospered so highly after the end of the second world war. Surely if what they say is true, the decline in the popularity of modernity would have taken hold long before 1970

@taxiturtle Exactly, postmodernism is a response to the failures of modernism - i.e. that science cant solve all our ills, that economic progress is not unlimited, that warfare can now be conducted on a massive scale.

They're saying postmodernism can be partially blamed on the fact that people had been led into two world wars, yet modernism saw it's most popular period from 1945 to 1970...

What is this? First guy is talking about the Modern era. Modernism is not synonymous with the modern era or modernity. The modern era begins in the seventeenth century around the time of Descartes. "Modernism" is an artistic movement that begins in the late-nineteenth century that is invested in exploring the fragmentation of subjectivity and the discontinuity of experience in late-capitalism. It's not about rationalism; really, it's kind of the opposite.

I personally think that Modernism is evil, and is not the thrive of science, but the pure destruction of science, and the rationality within.

But who am i to judge. In the end, prophecies either become reality, or stay fiction. And if our Lord truly exists, he shall judge us for rejecting Him, and his authority. And we shall find out whether we truly are foolish by Heart, and Mind, or whether religious beliefs are as propagated to us, pure fantasy.
