  • The older version is outstanding, and in my experience, image stabilization won't be necessary when shooting macro since you will be on a tripod anyway.

  • Since I use a smaller aperture for great depth of field, the higher ISO offsets the need for a slow shutter which could lead to blur on a breezy day. An external flash or ring light is certainly helpful but it needs to be carefully balanced not to overpower the ambient or risk an over-flashed appearance.

  • Live view > magnification > = sharpe images. Ive never seen it explained like that. (Light bulb moment for me) Unsharpen photos are an issue for me. Is there anyway of using the magnification function while shooting through the viewfinder.

I just seem to struggle getting nice focus. (If I cant see sharpen things in viewfinder I cant lock on)

  • hi, would you recommend the new 100 L macro IS or the old version is good enough already? thanks

  • In your description you mentioned an ISO of 400. Why did you boost your ISO so high on such a relatively bright day? Is it because of the shaded area you were using? Do you recommend a ring flash and step the ISO back down instead?

  • Great tips! Many thanks!
