In Game 1 of the first round of the 2001 NBA Playoffs, the 4th-seeded and veteran Utah Jazz defeated the young up-and-coming 5th-seeded Dallas Mavericks in dramatic fashion, rallying from 6 points down in the game's final minutes.
In a contest that would mark the playoff debut of Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley, and Mark Cuban (Dallas' first playoff appearance since 1990), the game's best player was 39-year old John Stockton. Stockton's remarkable line of 12 points, 18 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks - along with Karl Malone's 26 points - offset Finley's 26, Nowitzki's 20, and Steve Nash's 20 points.
The Mavericks would eventually win the best-of-5 series, defeating the Jazz in Game 5 at the Delta Center for their first playoff series win since defeating the Lakers in 1988.
