Every fall we have the disgusting spectacle of EVERYONE on TV wearing poppies. So if you don't wear a poppy you are what ... unpatriotic ...unrespectable ... unenlightened?

This just another example of how spineless and conformist the canadian media is. In none of these wars were canadians fighting to protect their country or family, so we are honoring people who were cannon fodder for the establishment. To me, anything the mainstream media is pushing should be viewed with suspicion.

They are a gift from God when used wisely.
Much suffering has been alleviated with the prudent use of the poppy and it's derivatives.
Unfortunately it seems to be human nature to take a good thing and turn it bad with over indulgence.

that is the bait and switch. the powers try to get the public to focus on "abuse" which diverts their attention form the abuse of power they are using. The much MUCH bigger threat is the government and other powers telling us what we can and can't use or grow.
opium is illegal because people want control over the poor.

no, prohibition is the problem. learn the facts.

prohibtion makes opium lucrative. if it were legal it would be worth as much as cabbage, and thus, of no use to the taliban. as long as opium is illegal, there will be no victory in the region. opiumis their money fountain, and our drug policies facilitate that.
but if we did legalize their opium, australia and turkey would freak. they have the legal opium market cornered.
so we fight opium in one country 2 protect another's crops. clever.
