An Avalanche near Rossland BC killed a Skier from Alberta. Weather conditions and poor access to the area prevented a rescue but searchers were able to recover the body later the next day. It was the first avalanche death in BC for 2010
STORY: TMTV/BCTV Kootenays for Global TV & CBC TV, Jan 5, 2010 - The Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment have confirmed that the deceased victim from yesterdays avalanche has been recovered from the Mt. MACKIE area in the West Kootenay region near Rossland British Columbia. The recovery was first hampered by poor weather preventing a proper risk assessment of the surrounding area. Once the weather cleared the Rossland Search and Rescue team along with the RCMP and other local partners were able to utilize a helicopter with long line recovery team to aid in the recovery in djohnson steep and secluded terrain.
The recovery was completed without any further incident and the body has now been turned over to the BC Coroners office.
The RCMP and other emergency services would like to remind all back country enthusiasts of the inherent dangers of these activities and that tragedy can occur at any time no matter what level of preparedness or experience you possess.
