Here we are with gasoline at $4 a gallon, and all those wonderfully energy efficient streetcars and trolleys that once were everywhere now mostly gone. Thank God for Philly and the remaining traction systems.

Acts sort of like a road vehicle (like a bus), but it's not... I wish the trolley still ran through my town like it did in the early 1900s!

I'm here in S. Calif. and we are getting ours back these look great in your town. Keeping my fingers crossed that you get yours back.

i think the bus substitution is perminant for route 23. septa cancled it because its too long of route and it would cost too much money to get it back on track. i never saw the 23 trolley run.

Too bad there are so many cars. They ruin things for streetcars and other living things!

Haha, at 0:07 when you hear someone saying "Hi No-ah!", that's my old babysitter talking to my little brother, who was one year old at the time.

SEPTA is balls on ass broke! In the process, everyone has to pay for it's outlandish budget deficit one way or another. I want to also add this, I read an article in a nationwide publication a few years ago, Septa pays out a lot for disability claims for it's employees, meaning Septa has an enormous disability budget, the largest out of any transit company in North America. So, it means that Septa has to many deadbeat employees out on disability! Philadelphia needs an enema!
oaksmodelrr, do they still run chartered trolleys on Germantown Ave anymore?
Tubes12AX7k 2 years ago 2
No, there haven't been trolleys on Rt 23 in years. Although the rails and wires were replaced when they rebuilt the roadway on Germantown last year, there are no trolley at Gtown Depot and the wires are cut at Wayne Jct. Officially the Rt 23 Trolleys are "temporarily" replaced with busses, as is Rt 56. Only Rt 15 has seen the trolleys return. Right now there is no equipment and SEPTA shows little or no interest in having the trolleys return.

Thank you! I used to ride the 23 from Gravers Lane, Chestnut Hill to Germantown and catch the 75 to Frankford to church as a youngster...I really hope SEPTA will restore the "world's longest trolley line" [23] soon! An ex-pat in DC!

Just this week PennDOT started working on Germantown Ave near Mermaid Lane, going to redo the whole thing, utilities and all including all new trolley tracks which are currently paved over. Should be done in a couple years.

@oaksmodelrr
I haven't been up to Germantown in a while, last time was back in 2006. I saw that they covered over sections of track with asphalt. I was under the impression that they were going to just cover everything over like they did on Toresdale avenue for the Rt. 56? So, is there a restoration in the works for the 23? I would like them to incorporate the section of the 23 that would run from Girard avenue south through center city and down to South Philly.

@italobambino43, They have been working on Germantown Avenue the past few years and they are putting in new trolley tracks as they rebuild the roadway, so there is always hope that the "temporary" bustitution is not permanent. SEPTA currently does not have the equipment to put trolleys back.
