Very interesting - stumbled upon this looking for Poll Tax in the UK. However in the UK we make provisions for postal voting, which I participate in - ensures you get your vote, if you can't reach a polling station. No need for time off work or visiting a polling station - not sure of the US system though :)

It is done in some states.

But you never know what could happen to your ballot if you vote the wrong way. The electronic votes are worse - poof, and it's lost in the ether, or even switched to your opponent.

And amazingly (or not), election fraud is rarely prosecuted, and punishments, when they occur at all, are light.
