This always reminds me of the character Blasillo from Miguel de Unamuno's "San Manuel Bueno, mártir"
Don Manuel teaches the town's mentally retarded resident things that everyone thought was impossible for him. So now, he goes around saying "My God! My God! Why hast thou forsaken me?" a la Jesus.
Everyone in the town is impressed with his repetition, but Unamuno uses a retarded man for the character to emphasize that he does not understand anything he's saying. He's just good at repetition.
