In the Mix is the Emmy award winning PBS documentary series for teens.
There's no question that serious depression, self-mutilation, suicide attempts and deaths are increasing among middle school age youth.
• Pediatrics (Feb 2007) reports that between 2003 and 2004, for youth aged 14-19 the suicide rate increased by 11% and for youth aged 10-14, the rate increased by 8%. They also report that depression affects one of every eight teenagers.
• As many as 9% of teens are engaging in some form of self-mutilation, often starting as young teens.
• The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (July 2007) reports that 21% of youths under age 18 who died by suicide had made a prior attempt and 31% had told someone they were thinking of suicide.
The earlier it is identified and treated, the better the prognosis. However, the signs are often dismissed as typical adolescent moods. Friends or siblings are often the first to suspect a problem and the only ones the person will confide in— and the depressed person may persuade their confidant to promise not to tell anyone. Sadly, most young teens are reluctant to break a promise, afraid to lose a friend or seem untrustworthy.
The program is primarily directed at middle school students who are seriously depressed, self-mutilating or at risk of suicide, as well as their friends, peers and siblings. Through sharing personal experiences and advice, the program helps these teens, as well as their friends, who often feel helpless. The DVD will appeal to a diverse audience of young people aged 11-17, both male and female.
