I witnessed this re-entry, in person. I had just finished delivering a northern CO newspaper, "The Johnstown Breeze." It was pretty wild, I didn't know what it was at the time.

I saw this type of entry 2 times- in Dec 87 and then again in late 1988. It was freaky.

I saw the same thing in the mid-1980's in Spring Mill State Park, Mitchel Indiana. It started out like a flare gun burst and expanded like this one across 2/3 of the sky. Reports said it was a russian satellite--I queried and here it is--amazing--thanks for the post.
